Captain Wang Sanhan of the "Haixun 22" ship: My National Day status — Online

During the National Day holiday, at Ningbo Zhoushan Port, giant ships shuttle back and forth while fishing boats come and go. To ensure that port operations are constantly "online," the maritime safety line here has never "gone offline" even for a moment. For Captain Wang Sanhan of the "Marine Patrol 22," staying on duty has been a holiday tradition for 35 years.

With the full opening of the fishing season in the East China Sea, over ten thousand fishing boats and a large number of merchant ships move in the same waters. The forward stationing of marine patrol boats serves as the first line of defense. From Xiashi Gate to Shipu Port, the 40-nautical-mile intersection area is where Captain Wang Sanhan is most concerned, and it’s also the post of the "Marine Patrol 22." Leading his team, he conducts round-the-clock patrols, continuously broadcasting reminders via high-frequency radio: "Attention all vessels, this is 'Marine Patrol 22.' Please enhance vigilance, control your speed, and maintain a safe distance from fishing boats!" With high traffic and narrow passages, he stations himself there, overseeing each vessel, guiding them safely, and mitigating risks before accidents occur.

The ships keep moving, and the equipment can't afford to fail either. Wang Sanhan and his team operate their main battlefield aboard this 86-meter-long enforcement ship. While others focus on navigating the sea, he also tackles the maintenance and repair of the ship and equipment. Personalized maintenance manuals, equipment failure warnings, and domestic substitution for satellite communication — an exemplary management mechanism for vessels has been implemented system-wide. When satellite communication equipment suddenly malfunctioned earlier, he didn’t wait or rely on others. Instead, he led his team to dismantle, inspect, and locate the problem overnight, ultimately completing the domestic substitution and securing the vital equipment in their control. With the ship’s operability rate staying consistently high, "Marine Patrol 22" has become a training base within and outside the system. He often says, "I don't have exceptional talent; I just persist a little longer."

While hardware must stay operational, emergency response readiness must also remain "online." On the deck, skills are taught directly in practice. Wang Sanhan trains his apprentices right there on the deck, teaching them to observe tides, discern wind directions, steer and dock, and troubleshoot faults — guiding them step-by-step. If someone can't answer correctly, he doesn't go easy on them, scolding them first, then making them practice on the equipment repeatedly until they get it. Apprentices once reprimanded by Wang Sanhan have since become captains and chief officers. "Rescue is the last line of defense," he often reminds the younger generation, "It’s not about one person being online; it’s about ensuring an entire generation stays online."

This year’s National Day holiday has seen faster-changing weather compared to previous years, with the sound of howling sea winds audible at night on the deck. It is thanks to maritime professionals like Wang Sanhan who remain steadfast during the holidays that maritime safety at Ningbo Zhoushan Port stays consistently "online."
