[Jiangsu] Yangtze River Zhenjiang Channel Office's "Yitong Escort" Volunteer Initiative Enters the Community
In July, during the peak of summer heat, it is also the high-risk period for youth drowning accidents. To enhance minors' safety awareness and self-rescue abilities, recently, young volunteers from the Youth League Committee of the Yangtze River Zhenjiang Navigation Channel Office visited the Dai Jia Xiang community to deliver a lively, engaging, and informative water safety education class to children participating in Zhenjiang City's summer "public custody service."

At the event site, the young volunteers transformed into "safety instructors," using illustrated PPTs and lively animated videos to explain to the summer custody class children the dangers of swimming in the wild, the "six no's" principle of drowning prevention, and the correct measures to take when encountering water-related dangers. "Kids, what should you do if you see someone drowning?" "How should you maintain breathing if you accidentally fall into the water?" Through interactive Q&A sessions, the volunteers helped the children remember the importance of "staying away from dangerous water areas" in a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere.

To ensure the children truly master self-rescue skills, the volunteers brought life jackets and other equipment into the classroom and conducted a "life jacket wearing demonstration lesson." The volunteers thoroughly explained the structure of life jackets, emphasizing the critical role of buckles, belts, and crotch straps in water safety. During the practical session, the children were enthusiastic, eagerly raising their hands to experience the demonstration on stage. The volunteers guided the children step by step in wearing practice, correcting their movements in detail to ensure every child on stage could quickly and correctly wear a life jacket.

"I learned it! I didn’t know life jackets have whistles and reflective strips; if you really fall into the water, you can blow the whistle for help." A summer custody class student excitedly showcased their learning achievements. Dai Jia Xiang community staff stated that the professional volunteers from the navigation channel unit used an entertaining and educational approach to fill the community's gap in professional water rescue knowledge. Such courses are practical and timely, not only enabling children to master self-rescue skills but also planting the seeds of safety awareness in their hearts.

It is reported that Zhenjiang City's summer "public custody service" is a livelihood project jointly implemented by the Zhenjiang Youth League Municipal Committee, the Municipal Charity Federation, the Municipal Social Work Department, the Municipal Education Bureau, and other departments. Leveraging this high-quality platform, the Youth League Committee of the Yangtze River Zhenjiang Navigation Channel Office, based on the "Beneficial Child Escort" volunteer service brand, delivered professional water safety education to community public custody classrooms, strengthening the safety defenses of summer custody services and making children's summer custody time safer and more secure.
