Three years of renovation and enhancement of 346 bridge systems: Beijing's under-bridge spaces transformed into "golden corners and silver edges."

Recently, Beijing's three-year action plan for improving under-bridge spaces has been fully completed, with the renovation and enhancement of all 346 bridge systems in the city. The previously dirty, chaotic, and idle "gray spaces" under bridges, which were prone to hazards, have successfully transformed into transparent, clean, convenient, beneficial, safe, and orderly "golden corners and silver edges," achieving a dual improvement in urban space quality and public service capacity.

During the action, the city cumulatively demolished 47,000 square meters of under-bridge buildings and 73,000 meters of old guardrails, completed 732,000 square meters of ground renovation, and added 6,505 square meters of green space. Efforts were made to continuously tap into the potential of spatial resources, resulting in the renovation of 13,373 parking spaces and the addition of 7,928 new parking spaces, effectively transforming the "idle corners" under bridges into "premium resources" serving public needs.

To ensure standardized, refined, and long-term implementation of governance work, Beijing has continuously improved its under-bridge space governance system. It innovatively introduced "three professionals"—responsible planners, responsible architects, and responsible horticulturists—to participate throughout the process of plan formulation and city-level joint review. From dimensions such as functional layout, landscape appearance, and safety design, meticulous attention was given to significantly enhance the professional quality of bridge area renovation designs. The "Technical Guidelines for Construction and Use of Under-Bridge Spaces in Beijing" were revised and improved, detailing standards for greening and beautification, specifying prohibitive clauses for under-bridge buildings and guardrail bollards, and adding construction norms for new energy charging facilities, thereby establishing institutional standards to support long-term management of under-bridge spaces.

Meanwhile, to address the charging needs of new energy vehicles, Beijing has steadily advanced the construction of charging facilities under bridges, continuously expanding the coverage of green and convenient services. A comprehensive survey was conducted to establish a special rectification ledger for 47 bridges and 141 locations. Targeting issues such as incomplete pedestrian facilities and inadequate guidance signage around certain bridge areas and under-bridge parking lots, efforts have been made to continuously improve slow traffic connectivity, traffic guidance signage, and barrier-free access functions.
