CYCLOHEXANONE

Cyclohexanone is an important organic compound with the chemical formula C₆H₁₀O. It is a six-membered cyclic ketone, characterized by a carbonyl group (C=O) attached to a cyclohexane ring. It is primarily used in the synthesis of adipic acid and caprolactam—both essential monomers for manufacturing nylon-6,6 and nylon-6, respectively. These polymers are widely used in textiles, automotive parts, and engineering plastics. Cyclohexanone is typically produced through the oxidation of cyclohexane in the presence of air or via catalytic dehydrogenation of cyclohexanol.

 

In addition to its use in polymer manufacturing, cyclohexanone serves as a versatile solvent in various industrial processes. It is employed in the formulation of paints, varnishes, and resins due to its ability to dissolve both polar and nonpolar substances. It is also used in some pesticide formulations and as a chemical intermediate in the synthesis of pharmaceuticals, perfumes, and other fine chemicals.
