Hot Topics Focus: Strong Costs Make Natural Rubber Increasingly "Assertive"

Market Review
Before the National Day holiday, rainfall disruptions in Southeast Asian production areas had not fully subsided, raw material purchase prices remained at year-high levels, and cost-side support remained effective, with natural rubber prices beginning to show an upward trend. After the holiday, multiple bullish factors arrived in succession, and natural rubber continued its firm pricing stance, with a notable increase.
Bullish Factor 1: Peak Production Season Disappoints, Raw Material Costs Climb
According to normal seasonal output patterns, production areas are currently in peak season, with relatively clear expectations for raw material increment, and cost-side support should theoretically be in a relatively weak state. However, during the National Day holiday, multiple areas in southern and eastern Thailand experienced floods and heavy rainfall, making tapping operations impossible to conduct normally and continuously limiting raw material output. Meanwhile, processing plants bid aggressively at high prices to secure raw materials for order fulfillment, further pushing up raw material purchase prices. The strong rise on the cost side became the core driver of post-holiday bullish sentiment.
On the domestic production side, operations were relatively stable during the holiday. In Yunnan, no significant rainfall interference occurred during the holiday, tapping proceeded normally, and raw material output remained stable, but competition among processing plants for raw materials was intense, keeping purchase prices firm. In Hainan, a divergent pattern of "stable first, tight later" emerged. In the first 5 days of the holiday, weather was clear, daily latex volume was relatively optimistic, but under pressure from processing plant purchases, prices weakened slightly. In the last 2 days, rainfall arrived, tapping was again disrupted, latex volume dropped sharply to scarce levels, and overall purchase prices stopped declining and rebounded slightly.
Bullish Factor 2: Super El Nino Event
The World Meteorological Organization has confirmed that the current El Nino event will reach "super intensity," with the peak expected around the end of 2026, and the probability of the event persisting through February 2027 is close to 100%. Southeast Asian major production areas face a more certain drought test, where high temperatures and low rainfall directly inhibit rubber tree physiological metabolism and latex flow, putting both tapping days and per-tree yield under pressure. More critically, the hidden damage to bark and root systems from drought has a lag effect - even if rainfall returns later, yield recovery typically takes more than half a year, delivering a profound blow to peak-season production capacity.
Bearish Factor 1: Downstream Price Transmission Impeded, Operating Rates Constrained
During the National Day holiday, most sample enterprises entered shutdown maintenance status, with operating rates falling to seasonally low levels. After the holiday, some enterprises gradually resumed operations, but certain tire enterprises delayed restart for various reasons, and the tire industry operating rate remains at low levels. Meanwhile, a few large enterprises maintained normal operations to ensure routine product supply. With raw material prices continuing to rise, cost-side pressure is significant, but resistance to price increases exists at various distributor channel levels, and price transmission from raw materials to downstream products remains impeded.
Market Outlook
Natural rubber is currently in the upstream peak production phase, with seasonal supply increment expectations still present. However, some Thai production areas still have short-term heavy rainfall warnings, and tapping operations and raw material release may again be disrupted. Raw material purchase prices are expected to remain at high levels, and cost-side support is unlikely to ease in the short term. Demand-side pressure is gradually emerging, with downstream resistance to high-priced raw materials intensifying. High costs continue to suppress concentrated restocking willingness, and procurement pace is becoming cautious. On inventory, Qingdao warehouse post-holiday inventory accumulation pressure has somewhat increased, further dragging on the pace of rubber price increases. With bullish and bearish factors intertwined, the natural rubber market is expected to maintain a high-level wide-range fluctuation and consolidation pattern in the short term, with cost floor support and demand drag coexisting, and limited room for both upside and downside.
