The Yangtze River’s main navigation channel is expected to handle over 400 million metric tons of cargo entering and leaving ports during the 2026 Spring Festival travel rush.
Xinhua News Agency Wuhan, March 15 (Reporter Li Siyuan) On the 14th, the reporter learned from the Yangtze River Navigation Administration of the Ministry of Transport that during the 40-day Spring Festival travel season in 2026, the cargo volume entering and leaving ports on the Yangtze River mainline reached 403 million tons, an increase of 6.33% compared to the same period in 2025.
During the Spring Festival travel season, no general or higher-level water traffic accidents occurred on the Yangtze River mainline. The Yangtze River navigation management department continued to ensure the transportation of key urgent materials such as electric coal, with coal transportation reaching 87.742 million tons, an increase of 7.69% compared to the same period in 2025; optimized export services for machinery, equipment, and electrical products, with container throughput reaching 29.8954 million tons, an increase of 14.27% compared to the same period in 2025.
Yangtze River water tourism passenger transport showed a strong growth trend. Data shows that during this year's Spring Festival travel season, the Yangtze River mainline cruise passenger volume reached 1.1823 million, an increase of 18.01% compared to the same period in 2025. Among them, inter-provincial cruise passenger volume reached 56,300, an increase of 73.05% compared to the same period in 2025.
The Three Gorges navigation management department carried out lock maintenance work in an orderly manner, with the Three Gorges hub operating a total of 1,408 lock (chamber) times during the Spring Festival travel season, passing 4,020 ships and 15.488 million tons of cargo. The Three Gorges hub river section received nearly 818,000 passengers, an increase of 75.3% compared to the same period in 2025.
