Titanium dioxide TiO2 is a metal compound made up of titanium and oxygen. Its crystalline structure is commonly found in three polycrystalline forms: rutile. anatase. and plagioclase. The predominant form is rutile. which contains square cells where titanium ions are coordinated by six surrounding oxygen ions in an octahedral shape. As a transitional metal. titanium has D orbitals that play a role in bonding and conduction. In TiO2 crystals. each titanium atom is surrounded by six oxygen atoms while each oxygen atom has three neighboring titanium atoms. The charge of the TiO2 titanium atom is 4 as it has lost 4 out of its original 22 electrons. while the oxygen atom has a charge of -2 after gaining 2 electrons. This results in a stable electronic structure for the titanium ion with a [Kr] configuration. and a [He]2s2 2p6 configuration for the oxygen ion.
Applying PVC cement is a critical step in ensuring a durable and leak-free connection between PVC pipes and fittings. Before application, ensure the surfaces are clean and dry. Utilize a primer if recommended by the manufacturer, as it prepares the PVC surfaces for cementing by softening them, allowing for better bonding. Apply PVC cement sparingly but evenly around the outside of the pipe and the inside of the fitting, covering the entire surface intended to be joined. Immediately after applying the cement, insert the pipe into the fitting with a slight twisting motion to evenly distribute the cement. Hold the pipe and fitting together firmly for a few seconds to prevent them from pushing apart as the cement sets. It's imperative to work quickly as PVC cement sets fast. Ensure proper ventilation during the application due to the strong fumes emitted by the cement and primer. Always refer to the product's instructions for specific drying and curing times before subjecting the joint to any pressure.
Once PVC pipe has been glued using solvent cement, it's nearly impossible to separate without damage because the solvent welds the plastic together on a molecular level. If you find yourself needing to change a section, your best course of action is to cut the pipe. Use a hacksaw, PVC cutter, or a cable saw for tight spaces. After cutting out the section, you can use couplers and additional PVC pipe to bridge the gap. Always ensure the new joints are properly cleaned, primed, and glued. In some non-pressure applications or temporary fixes, a repair might be feasible with a sleeve, but for a permanent, reliable solution, cutting and replacing the affected section is your best bet. Remember, safety first: wear protective eyewear and gloves when cutting.
