Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) is a versatile thermoplastic known for its wide range of applications from construction materials to medical devices. Its ability to crystallize is limited due to the bulky chlorine atoms attached to the carbon backbone, which hinder the close packing necessary for crystallization. While pure PVC is amorphous and doesn't crystallize well under normal conditions, adding certain types of heat stabilizers or undergoing specific processing conditions like controlled cooling can induce a degree of crystallinity. This crystalline structure can enhance certain mechanical properties such as stiffness and thermal resistance, though at the expense of clarity and flexibility. However, the extent of crystallinity achievable in PVC is generally lower compared to other thermoplastics due to its inherent molecular structure.
Weld lines in injection molding occur when molten plastic from different flow fronts meets and solidifies without merging completely, often resulting in a visually noticeable line and potentially diminished structural integrity. These defects are commonly found in complex parts where the plastic flow is split by features such as holes or inserts, then recombines. Factors contributing to the formation of weld lines include the type of material, injection speed, mold temperature, and part design. Minimizing weld line defects can be achieved by optimizing the mold design to ensure smoother flow patterns, adjusting processing parameters such as increasing mold temperature or injection speed to promote better fusion of the molten fronts, and selecting materials with better flow properties. Additionally, the strategic placement of gates can help direct the flow in a manner that reduces or eliminates weld lines. Addressing weld lines is crucial not only for aesthetic reasons but also for ensuring the part meets its required mechanical properties.
