The principle behind the softness of soft PVC: Soft PVC (such as plastic wrap and IV tubing) relies on plasticizers to achieve its softness and bendability. These plasticizers act like a "sponge" between rigid molecular chains, but the plasticizers only physically interact with the PVC molecules and are not firmly bonded.
The consequences of plasticizer loss: Over time, the plasticizers gradually precipitate, causing the soft PVC to permanently lose its softness and irreversibly degrade its performance.

When PVC plastic wrap is used to wrap fried foods or braised pork, the oil accelerates the dissolution of the plasticizer, often exceeding safety standards and posing a health risk.

The significant difference in chemical corrosion resistance between hard and soft PVC
Hard PVC's excellent corrosion resistance: Due to its extremely low plasticizer content, its molecular structure is tightly packed, making it resistant to acids and bases like hydrochloric acid and sodium hydroxide. It is widely used in chemical storage tanks and pipelines, with a service life of over a decade. For example, pipelines transporting dilute hydrochloric acid can last for over 15 years.

A significant weakness of rigid PVC: poor temperature resistance
Limitations in temperature resistance: Rigid PVC's upper temperature limit for long-term use is typically only 50°C. Above this temperature, the molecular chain becomes more active, loosening its tight structure and causing a sharp drop in stiffness and strength (known as "soft foot"). It is also not resistant to low temperatures. When the ambient temperature drops below 0°C, it quickly becomes brittle and easily shatters like glass.
Problems in practical applications:
If rigid PVC is mistakenly used as hot water pipes in homes, prolonged exposure to 60-70°C hot water can easily lead to pipe warping and leaks at joints.
Rigid PVC pipes used at factory reactor outlets can crack in a short period of time at temperatures of 80-90°C, causing serious accidents.
Frozen and cracked water pipes frequently occur in northern China during winter, primarily due to rigid PVC's low-temperature resistance.
These minor flaws of PVC are not isolated.
