In contrast, polypropylene copolymer introduces a small amount of ethylene monomer during the polymerization process. These ethylene segments are randomly distributed in the main molecular chain, destroying the regularity of the molecular chain and reducing the crystallinity.
This structure enables the molecular chain of the copolymer to absorb the impact energy through a certain deformation when it is impacted, thereby significantly improving the impact toughness of the material. According to the different ethylene content, copolymers can be divided into random copolymers and block copolymers. Among them, block copolymers have more outstanding impact resistance because they form relatively independent rubber phase regions, especially at room temperature.
Chemical stability is the core advantage of polypropylene in the industrial field. This material has good tolerance to most acid, alkali and salt solutions, and is not prone to chemical corrosion even in long-term contact.
At the same time, it also shows strong resistance to organic substances such as aliphatic hydrocarbons and vegetable oils. This feature makes it an ideal choice for products such as chemical storage tanks, pipelines, and food packaging containers. In the field of food contact, polypropylene can meet food safety standards after compliance treatment and will not release harmful substances to contaminate food. Therefore, it is widely used in packaging products such as beverage bottles, lunch boxes, and plastic wrap.
Fatigue resistance is another important performance indicator of polypropylene. Under long-term repeated stress conditions, many materials will gradually fail due to stress accumulation, while polypropylene molecular chains have a certain elastic recovery ability, which can disperse stress during repeated deformation and delay the generation and expansion of fatigue cracks.
This feature makes it particularly suitable for parts that require frequent movement, such as plastic hinges, toy shafts, household appliance knobs, etc. These products need to withstand thousands or even millions of opening and closing or rotation operations in long-term use. The fatigue resistance of polypropylene guarantees its service life.
However, polypropylene has a significant performance shortcoming - low-temperature brittleness. When the ambient temperature drops below 0℃, the mobility of the polypropylene molecular chain decreases significantly, the flexibility of the material decreases sharply, and the impact resistance deteriorates accordingly, and it is very easy to break when subjected to external forces.
This defect limits the application of polypropylene in low-temperature environments, such as outdoor facilities in cold areas, refrigeration equipment components, etc. To improve this problem, the industry usually adopts the method of adding toughening agents (such as elastomers and rubber particles) to form an elastic dispersed phase in the polypropylene matrix to improve the molecular chain activity of the material at low temperatures, thereby alleviating the low-temperature brittleness problem.
Based on the above performance characteristics, the application field of polypropylene presents a diversified development trend.
