PP High-Temp Stability in Humid & Water Immersion Conditions
Polypropylene (PP), a widely used general-purpose plastic, boasts a core advantage in maintaining stable mechanical and electrical properties even at high temperatures, a characteristic particularly pronounced in humid environments and water immersion conditions. Coupled with its excellent waterproof properties, PP becomes an ideal choice for many special environmental applications.
The stability of PP's performance stems from its unique molecular structure and chemical composition. It is formed by the addition polymerization of propylene monomers, with a saturated carbon-carbon single-bond structure in its main molecular chain. The absence of polar groups results in extremely high chemical stability, making it resistant to oxidation and hydrolysis—the core foundation for its stable performance in high-temperature and humid environments.
Compared to polyethylene, PP molecules contain methyl side chains, and the steric hindrance effect increases molecular packing density and crystallinity, further enhancing the material's rigidity, heat resistance, and mechanical strength. Simultaneously, its non-polar structure results in extremely low surface energy and a large water contact angle, endowing it with natural waterproof properties.
Based on these molecular structural advantages, PP exhibits excellent mechanical and electrical property stability at high temperatures. In terms of mechanical properties, its stability is primarily reflected in its ability to retain key indicators such as tensile strength and flexural strength.
Ordinary polypropylene has a heat distortion temperature of approximately 100℃, which can be increased to over 120℃ after modification. Within this temperature range, there is no significant softening or sharp drop in mechanical properties.
At 80-100℃, the tensile strength retention rate exceeds 80%, and the flexural modulus retention rate exceeds 75%, sufficient to meet most high-temperature load-bearing requirements. In terms of electrical properties, polypropylene exhibits minimal changes in dielectric constant and dielectric loss tangent at high temperatures, and its insulation resistance remains stable, thus demonstrating significant advantages in the field of high-temperature electrical equipment insulation.
Crucially, polypropylene's high-temperature performance stability is further enhanced in humid environments and under water immersion conditions. Most polymer materials are prone to performance degradation in humid environments due to water absorption. For example, nylon (PA) experiences changes in crystallinity after water absorption, resulting in reduced tensile and impact strength; polyvinyl chloride (PVC) may experience plasticizer migration in humid and high-temperature environments, affecting flexibility and mechanical stability.
However, polypropylene, due to its hydrophobic molecular structure, absorbs almost no water; even when placed in high-humidity environments for extended periods, its water absorption rate is typically below 0.03%. This extremely low water absorption rate ensures that its molecular chain structure remains undamaged by moisture in humid and high-temperature environments, maintaining mechanical and electrical properties essentially the same as in dry environments.
When polypropylene is directly immersed in water, its advantages in waterproofing and high-temperature performance stability become even more pronounced. Under high-temperature conditions underwater, water not only cannot penetrate the material but also aids in heat dissipation, mitigating the slight impact of high temperatures on performance.
Experimental data shows that after immersing polypropylene samples in 80°C water for 1000 hours, the tensile strength decreased by only about 5%, the impact strength remained essentially unchanged, and the dielectric strength retention rate exceeded 90%. In contrast, under the same conditions, polyethylene experienced a tensile strength decrease of up to 15%, and its insulation performance also significantly deteriorated. This differentiated advantage makes polypropylene the preferred material for underwater high-temperature equipment, water pipelines, and underwater cable sheathing applications.
Thanks to these core performance advantages, polypropylene has achieved widespread application in multiple industries: in the automotive industry, it is used in high-temperature components around engines (such as intake manifolds) and underwater components (such as water tanks), precisely adapting to high-temperature and humid working environments.
In the electrical field, its films can serve as insulation materials for high-temperature capacitors, ensuring the insulation performance and service life of equipment in humid environments.
In the water supply and drainage field, polypropylene pipes, relying on their waterproof and high-temperature resistant properties, are widely used in hot water transportation, sewage treatment, and other scenarios.
In the aerospace field, it is used for the shells and components of airborne equipment to adapt to the extreme environments of high altitudes, humidity, and large temperature differences.
To further expand the application boundaries of polypropylene in extreme high-temperature and humid environments, the industry has optimized its performance through various modification technologies.
For example, adding reinforcing materials such as glass fiber and carbon fiber can improve high-temperature rigidity and mechanical strength; adding additives such as antioxidants and ultraviolet absorbers can enhance anti-aging capabilities under high-temperature environments; and surface modification technologies can further reduce surface energy, improving waterproof and antifouling performance.
The application of these modification technologies effectively broadens the performance boundaries of polypropylene, enabling it to adapt to more demanding application scenarios.
