Argon permeability in HDPE (High-Density Polyethylene) materials is an aspect of importance particularly in industries requiring gas barrier properties in packaging or containment applications. HDPE, by its nature, is relatively impermeable to many gases due to its dense, closely packed polymer structure. However, small gas molecules like argon can diffuse through it over time, although at a significantly slower rate compared to less dense polymers. The actual rate of argon permeation through HDPE would depend on factors such as the thickness of the HDPE material, temperature, and the presence of any additives that might alter the polymer matrix. Despite HDPE not being the absolute best barrier against gases, its cost-effectiveness, strength, and chemical resistance make it a viable choice for many applications where slight gas permeation over time is not critical. For applications requiring a near-zero argon permeation rate, combining HDPE with barrier materials or coatings that significantly reduce gas diffusion might be necessary.
PVC pipes can indeed freeze when exposed to temperatures below freezing (0°C or 32°F) for an extended period. Water expands as it freezes, increasing pressure inside the pipe. However, PVC pipes are less likely to burst due to freezing compared to metal pipes since PVC has a certain degree of flexibility which allows it to expand slightly. Nonetheless, if the pressure becomes too great, PVC pipes can still crack or burst. To prevent freezing, it is advisable to insulate pipes, keep indoor spaces heated, and allow faucets to drip slightly during extremely cold spells to relieve pressure.
To fix a leaking threaded PVC joint, begin by turning off the main water supply to prevent further leakage. Then, carefully unscrew and separate the leaking joint. Clean off any old thread sealant, debris, or dirt from the threading on both the male and female ends. Once thoroughly cleaned, apply a fresh layer of Teflon tape (PTFE tape) over the male thread, wrapping in the direction of the thread spiral to ensure a tighter seal. Alternatively, you can use a suitable PVC thread sealant compound, applying it according to the manufacturer's instructions. After applying the thread sealant or Teflon tape, reassemble the joint by screwing it back together firmly but do not over-tighten as it might damage the PVC threads. Turn the water supply back on and check for leaks. If the joint continues to leak, it may indicate damage to the threads or a misalignment issue, requiring replacement of the affected parts.
